Engineering Intern

NRECA International provides technical assistance, project management, and program design & support to utilities and program management agencies engaged in rural electrification. It manages projects that involve design, procurement, construction, and operation of rural electric generation and distribution systems. The clients it serves face significant management, administrative, and technical challenges and are seeking support and guidance to reach commercial viability.

Position Summary:  

The Engineering Intern will provide support for construction of an electric generation-distribution system in Southern Sudan. He/she will assist a team of rural electrification professionals, providing on-site support by creating and/or updating design drawings, assisting with structural and electrical final design and construction, and providing procurement and logistical support as needed.

The job site for this position will be in two locations, including Kapoeta and Maridi, two trading centers located in Eastern and Western Equatoria states, respectively. The position will have a duration of approximately six months. NRECA will provide accommodations and a monthly stipend for the duration of the assignment. NRECA will additionally provide for transportation, any required evacuation, internet access, and pre-travel vaccinations/visas.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the site engineer in final design and documentation activities.
  • Participate in electrical and structural construction activities, as needed.
  • Manage procurement and logistical tasks as assigned by the site engineer.
  • Participate in other activities as assigned by NRECA engineering and management personnel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

The Engineering Intern should have at minimum a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an accredited college or university. In addition, the Intern should have at least one year of practical work experience with engineering design activities, including previous internship experience and/or professional experience working with an engineering design team. Practical construction experience with mechanical, electrical and structural systems is preferred. Experience with procurement and logistics is also preferred.  Prior experience volunteering for Peace Corps or other international development initiatives preferred.
